OUR CLIFFTOP WEDDING
Anna & Matthias at the Robber's Castle
Read Anna and Matthias' Wedding Story
Anna and Matthias came from Germany to get married in Denmark. As their wedding location, they chose the clifftop of the Robber’s Castle with its stunning views over the Baltic Sea.
As they wanted to combine their honeymoon with the wedding ceremony, they arrived without wedding guests. Unlike in many other countries, Danish law requires apart from the couple and the registrar also two witnesses to attend the wedding ceremony. The witnesses will be required afterwards to sign the necessary paperwork for the marriage certificate. In the case of elopement weddings, Wedding on the Rocks will be happy to arrange for the witnesses to attend the wedding ceremony and supply the signatures for the marriage certificate.
If also you wish to get married on Bornholm, with or without your own witnesses, and are in need of someone to guide you all the way to the altar, please contact us on the form below. We’ll get back to you immediately.
Why We Got Married on Bornholm
“We wanted to spend our vacation in Denmark and heard about the different landscapes of Bornholm from a colleague of Mathi before we left. We saw some pictures of Bornholm before and then – as we also decided to get married in Denmark – we found the website of Wedding on the Rocks with the different offers to marry in nature and we just fell in love with the Robbers Castle.”
The Robber's Castle and It's Stunning Views
Bornholm’s beautiful ‘Robber’s Castle’ (Røverborgen) is not really an actual castle. It’s merely a natural clifftop rising high above the Baltic Sea. The ‘castle’ is situated on the north coast of Bornholm close to Gudhjem. Surrounded by the wilderness off the beaten track, the cliffs offer a spectacular view over the sea. The clifftop is difficult to find for tourists and therefore offers a secluded and private setting for weddings even in the high season during the summer.
The name, by the way, derives from a classic Danish movie “Sicilianerrøverens Bryllup” (The Sicilian Robber’s Wedding) from 1919. In the movie, the clifftop is used as a backdrop for some spectacular and hair-raising action scenes.
Unlike in the movie, Anna and Matthias (or our wedding planners and the registrar) did not have to swing from rock to rock or climb the rocky surface of the clifftop for a daring escape. Everybody could leisurely walk up the ‘Stairway to Heaven’, leading to a platform that just seems to be made for clifftop weddings of the adventurous kind.
Anna and Matthias' Wedding Decorations
For Anna and Matthias’ wedding, our wedding planners decorated the natural platform on the clifftop of the Robber’s Castle with a traditional Danish wedding arch. We also brought along a wedding cake as well as something to toast with after the ceremony.
Beforehand, our wedding planners took Anna to our local organic gardener and florist to decide upon the colour choice and theme of her wedding in the Danish wilderness. Her choices fitted incredibly well within the wild nature. They also added to the untamed beauty of her wedding location.
“The warm-hearted and actually private welcome of the gardener and florist as well as the wedding planner at the beautiful place of H(e)aven Bornholm in order to choose the flowers for the ceremony was exceptional. And to sit there for a talk with the florist. We didn’t expect that. It was really nice. The flowers and the bouquet were simply beautiful arranged,” Anna told us after the ceremony.
The Wedding
Upon their arrival at the Robber’s Castle, the bride and groom were received by the registrar from the registry office in Rønne. She performed the ceremony in German. Wedding on the Rocks had dealt with the paperwork beforehand to ensure Anna and Matthias marriage was accepted back home in Germany. Anna’s mother was able to follow the wedding ceremony over a mobile phone link. The happy couple could enjoy the wonderful view over the Baltic Sea while saying their “I dos”.
After the wedding, the traditional toast with locally sourced apple juice was performed . Then Anna & Matthias cut the wedding cake. The wedding photographer took the newly wedded couple on a journey around the beautiful surroundings for a private wedding photo shoot before the couple continued on their honeymoon to… Bornholm, of course!
💞 Wedding on the Rocks is very grateful to have been a small part of Anna & Matthias’ journey into wedded life and wish them the very best for their future. 💞
