History of the Wedding Cake

The history of wedding cakes dates back all the way to the ancient Greek and Romans. They were to begin with not necessarily sweet cakes, but closer to bread. The grooms among the old Romans broke their wedding cake – or bread – over the bride’s head to manifest her submission.

Fast forward to England and the 17th century, where the wedding cake was made from meat and the occasional oyster. Already then, the cakes were also meant to entertain the guests. The wedding cake baker therefore often hid snakes (!) or birds within to made the wedding party jump when the animals escaped.

Decorating sweet wedding cakes, however, were first made popular by Queen Victoria through her wedding to Prince Albert. They remain as popular as they were then and represent the steady centrepiece of the celebration.

Wedding Cake Traditions

When it comes to wedding cake traditions, most of them remain the same all over the world. In most, but not all, circumstances the wedding cake is covered in white icing. This wedding tradition dates back to times where sugar was an expensive item on the shopping list. The white icing on the cake was to show that no money has been spared for the wedding party.

Also the act of the bride and groom cutting the wedding cake together is a tradition most cultures adhere to globally. In Europe, the honour of cutting the wedding cake belonged to the bride. First in the 19th century, as wedding cakes grew, the groom need to assist his new partner in life to avoid the giant tiered wedding cakes to topple over.

Also the tradition of the bride and groom feeding each other wedding cake has its roots in many cultures. This cute ritual symbolizes the newly-weds’ commitment to each other. By giving the other food, they commit to nurture and provide for each other.

Wedding Cake Superstitions

When you marry in Denmark, one of the most important wedding cake superstitions to consider is to cut the cake before midnight to avoid bad luck. Another Danish wedding superstition involves the bride keeping a slice of the wedding cake. This is to ensure, that her husband remains faithful. In some cases, a Danish couple will keep the top tier of the wedding cake to eat on their first anniversary or when their first child is born.

Among the international wedding superstitions, the wedding cake slice under the pillow of unmarried wedding guests remains popular. Though first only applied to single women in the wedding party, modern times suggest that anyone without a partner can dream of their future husband or wife by placing the wedding cake slice under the pillow.

But the most important wedding cake superstition is still to share your cake with your wedding guests to guarantee future prosperity. Here it is also important that you send the leftover cake to those who could not attend your special wedding day.

What to Consider When Ordering Your Wedding Cake

Before you discuss and order your wedding cake with your wedding planner, you should consider a few not unimportant points:

The size of the wedding cake – how many people are going to eat a slice?

Dietary requirements of your wedding cake – do either of you or any of your guests have any food allergies such as against nuts, flour, eggs, milk products. etc.?

The style of your wedding cake – will it be tiered or not? Should it fit in with other wedding decorations or set the tone for wedding decorations?

Where the wedding cake is served – in a wedding venue or out in nature? If you have a beach wedding, a cream cake might not be advisable with regard to the sand.

Wedding cake toppers & tokens – will you have a wedding cake topper and would you like charms or tokens baked into the wedding cake?
